![]() It is a book fascinating both for its historical detail and for the secrets it contains. Robert-Houdin specialties including “The Enchanted Portfolio” and “The Light and Heavy Chest” are also fully explained. This edition was translated and edited with notes by Professor Hoffmann highlights include a complete description of Robert Houdin’s Paris Magic Theatre, an in-depth discussion of the Pepper’s Ghost Illusion (undoubtedly the best in any magic textbook) and a very detailed explanation (68 pages, almost a book in itself) of the pseudo spiritualistic feats of the Davenport Brothers, and other bogus spirit mediums. This volume, on which he was working at the time of his death (1871), was intended as a sequel to that great work and is primarily about stage magic and illusions whereas his first textbook concentrated on sleight of hand. This was one of the most difficult to obtain books written by Robert Houdin, The Father of Modern Magic and author of the classic SECRETS OF CONJURING AND MAGIC (1868).
